Fentanyl Overdoses Have Risen Over 500% in 3 Years

Studies show Fentanyl overdoses dramatically increasing.

Fentanyl is a strong synthetic opioid, 100 times more potent than morphine. The drug is often used in anesthesia and for palliative care. The World Health Organization
lists it as an essential medicine. However, the drug is often abused for recreational use. Many people addicted to synthetic opioids take it outside of its prescribed manner or cut it with heroin.

Deaths from fentanyl and fentanyl in conjunction with other illegal drugs have skyrocketed. According to studies conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, a division of the Center for Disease Control, drug overdoses killed around 64,000 people in 2016 alone. Of those overdoses, more than 20,000 were related to fentanyl use. Drug overdoses, often linked to fentanyl, remain the leading cause of death for persons under people under age 50.

This tragic rise in fentanyl deaths and opioid abuse, in general, has plagued state and municipal governments. Communities across the country have suffered budget issues due to the growing costs of emergency treatment connected to fentanyl and opioid abuse. This is a growing problem and without action, it will likely get worse. For more information on the rise in fentanyl overdose deaths click here: NY Times Article
